monument on the pierhead at the entrance
to the Kleinhüningen harbour that symbolizes the common geographical
point of Germany (Baden-Württemberg), France (Alsace), and Basle
(Basel-Stadt). The actual point is in the river. The monument
consists of three triangular twisted metal planes that form a dynamic
vertical shape. The projecting corners point into the direction of
the respective country that is indicated by a flag on the wing. It
thus points towards a more recent historic fact: Alsace that has changed
sides more than once in its history centuries belongs to France only
since 1945. Presumably intended to be an optimistic sign of peaceful
cohabitation it is hard to ignore the militaristic associations of
the rocket or fighter-plane design of the installation.
